No matter when you actually plan to leave, the first thing you must do is start looking around at ticket prices. Just pick a place you’d like to go, and start checking prices at the major airline websites.

While you’re there, sign up for their free newsletters. Most airlines offer special promotional deals you won’t see anywhere else because these deals only go out to their subscribers.

You can also join mailing lists at the major travel sites like Travelocity, Expedia, and Orbitz, as they too sometimes offer special deals.

Not sure where you’d like to go? Or maybe you are willing to go anywhere if the price is right? That’s good, because the more flexible you are with your destination, your departure date, and travel times, the better chance you will have of finding some dirt cheap airline tickets.

Ticket prices (like just about everything else) are based in part on supply and demand. If you want to fly to the same place, at the same time as everyone else, you are going to pay top prices.

Generally, the cheapest fares are found for flights that aren’t leaving for at least 30 days, that leave and return mid week, with flights at odd times of the day. (Flights with several stops can also be a great deal!)
