Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom (AHN) – More airlines have canceled flights in and out of Scotland as the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano eruption spread.

British Air, KLM, Easyjet, Flybe, Aer Lingus, Loganair and Eastern Airways canceled their flights, while they delayed trips to the Atlantic.

Even U.S. President Barack Obama and his entourage skipped a one-night stay in Dublin and flew directly to London on Monday night to avoid any disruption in the group’s itinerary.

The airlines which announced flight disruptions are:

  • BA will not operate any flights between London and Scotland before 2 p.m. of Tuesday
  • KLM canceled 16 flights scheduled on Tuesday to and from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Newcastle
  • Eastern Airways canceled all its flights to and from Scottish airspace
  • Easyjet canceled flights to and from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Aberdeen from 5 to 9 a.m.
  • Flybe canceled flights to and from Aberdeen and Inverness
  • Aer Lingus canceled some flights from Ireland, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, and
  • Loganair canceled 36 flights.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Britain warned that particles from the ash could affect transatlantic flights if the cloud plum reaches western England on Thursday or Friday, depending on the wind direction.

On Tuesday, high winds caused the disruption to rail and road users in Scotland and Northern England as 100 miles per hour winds hit the two regions. There were also power cuts in the two areas.

Andrew Haines, CAA chief executive, said the agency is not ruling out disruption of more flights because safety of air passengers is their top priority. However, Haines added that new arrangements made last year after the Eyjafjallakokull eruption better prepared the aviations sector for natural catastrophes and would help reduce disruption if the situation worsens.
