Spiders prompt recall of 67,000 Mazda cars
Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – Mazda is recalling cars in the United States and Canada because of spiders in the fuel system.
The Japanese automaker said the yellow sac spider leaves webs in the tank assembly of some Mazda 6 cars.
The spider webs can grow into nests that eventually block a vent line, causing increased pressure in the tank, which in turn may lead to fuel leaks and fire.
The recall applies to 2009-2010 models made between April 2008 and February last year. A total of 52,000 cars in the United States are affected and 15,000 in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.
Mazda said it would contact owners in late March about when they can bring their cars to dealers. The company will provide free inspection and clean-up of the vent line.
Dealers will also install a spring to keep the insect from nesting in its fuel line.
