Volcanic eruption ash shuts down some air travel
Iceland (AHN) – A volcano erupting in Iceland spewed enough ash into the skies that no planes are going in and out of the Kaflavik International Airport.
The Grimsvotin volcano, which is under the Vatnajokull glacier, began erupting on Saturday.
Meteorologists and volcano experts don’t expect the eruption to be nearly as bad as the Eyjafjallajokull volcano eruption last year, which disrupted air travel across Europe for weeks.
And despite the flights being stopped at the airport, authorities were able to avoid cancellations and delays by flying people out of the airport early, according to Ice News.
British forecasters do not expect the ash cloud to reach the European continent.
The Grimsvotin is Iceland’s most frequently erupting volcano. Its last eruption was in 2004.
